Some Reflections on Islamic Feminism in Ramadan

We warmly welcome you to our second public event as part of Queering Ramadan with Wasla Collective. ‍

This talk introduces the audience to some of the scholarship and activism known as Islamic feminism. It will examine its intellectual and societal significance as well as its challenges. It will also reflect on the spiritual dimensions of Islamic feminism as faith-based endeavors to produce transformative knowledge.‍

Mulki Al-Sharmani is an Associate Professor of Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies, Faculty of Arts, University of Helsinki. She is the editor of Feminist Activism: Women's Rights and Legal Reform (2013), and co-editor of Wellbeing of Transnational Muslim Families: Marriage, Law, and Gender (2019),  Men in Charge? Rethinking Authority in Muslim Legal Tradition (2015). Her research interests include Muslim family law and gender activism in Egypt, Islamic feminism, and transnational Muslim marriages in in Europe.‍
