WED 20 APR

Feminist Herstories and the Struggles for Equity

Talk

Historiadialogit | History dialogues

In 2022, depolarize.fi inquires what we can learn from history as we work for equity in society today. For this, we are organising a series of dialogues that will explore the histories of different civil rights struggles in Finland. What happened when changes for the better were made? What struggles and forms of resistance have different groups and diaspora communities undertaken to gain recognition for their rights, to improve their living conditions and well-being, and to preserve their distinctiveness?‍

We welcome all those interested in learning more and sharing knowledge in these issues. The idea is to gather, to encounter new histories and peoples, to exchange ideas and to celebrate being together in difference.‍

The event series is organised by Miriam Attias & Giovanna Esposito Yussif and hosted by the Museum of Impossible Forms. The project is funded by Kone Foundation. The next events will take place on wed 11.5, wed 1.6, an wed 8.6. Save the dates ! ‍

Historiadialogit | History dialogues: Feminist herstories and the struggles for equity‍

We warmly welcome you to the third evening of the History Dialogues series, which will focus on the contemporary history of Feminism in Finland.‍

The evening will start with presentations by Sunniva Drake and Maryan Abdulkarim, followed by an opportunity for public discussion. After the presentations there will be refreshments and snacks, along with a special playlist for the evening. ‍

The talks will be in English. ‍

Speakers for the evening:‍

Sunniva Drake “I have always been an activist. I started my feminist activism at the age of 20. I was involved in bringing women's self-defence to Finland in the 80s and I still run courses for women. I was involved in a women's gynaecological self-help group in the 80s. I have been in the public eye when the opportunity has arisen to appear as a 'feminist'. I still consider myself a basic feminist, albeit a dinosaur these days.”

Maryan Abdulkarim is a writer and social justice activist who is interested in freedom. She participates actively in public discussion as a political commentator and a columnist. She collaborates regularly with choreographer Sonya Lindfors. Her second book will be published in collaboration with photographer Uwa Iduozee. Abdulkarim received the Minna Canth prize in 2019.
